Student societies in Estonia and Germany
Student societies in Estonia and Germany can be traced back to the 18th century. They were created by Baltic Germans, Jewish students, and Russian students. These organisations also grew in Finland during the period between two world wars.
During the early 19th century, students in Tartu started toying with the idea of creating their own organisation. In the spring of 1870, a small group met to discuss the topic. The meeting led to the establishment of the Estonian Students’ Society.
The University of Tartu had a handful of Estonian students in the first half of the 19th century. However, this number increased significantly later in the century.
